Oriana M. Damas, MD, advises trainees and faculty who are starting to provide care for patients with ulcerative colitis to look for subtle manifestations of the disease beyond superficial appearance. Asking about fatigue and sleep is just as important as asking about bowel movements in order to assess patients' overall quality of life.
Dr Damas also stresses that new faculty and community GI doctors should be comfortable with asking questions and take time to discuss treatment decision-making with colleagues.
