Recalling rounds with senior residents during medical school, Oriana M. Damas, MD, reflects on a case of a young male patient with ulcerative colitis (UC) whose condition prompted consideration of its cause.

Although its fundamental mechanism remained elusive, this mystery surrounding the root of the disease only enhanced Dr Damas' drive to ameliorate its effects in patients by using the expanding armamentarium of biologic agents. Such determination led to the present moment in which more is understood about the etiology of UC, which vitally underpins the effort to improve the symptoms of patients.
