David W. Goodman, MD, traces the evolution of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) from the 1980s, when it first took shape as a concept amid other psychiatric disorders, such as anxiety and depression, to succeeding decades in which it acquired clear definition as an independent pathology.
Parallel to this development has been the accelerating appearance of medications such as stimulants whose efficacy, especially in combination with nonpharmacologic therapies, is now well established.
