Sandra Quezada, MD, reflects on her mentor, Raymond Cross, MD, who helped shape her perspective in managing patients with ulcerative colitis in medical school and residency.

One important lesson was the language to guide patients through the complex and difficult treatment decisions, such as the need for surgery due to complicated flares. Dr Cross taught Dr Quezada to view surgery not as a failure of care but as an opportunity for positive outcomes for the patient.
