The Parallels Between the HIV and COVID-19 Pandemics

David A. Wohl, MD, considers how the initial reaction of the medical community to HIV serves as a template for the response to COVID. Placing that engagement within the broader context of infectious disease, Dr Wohl draws a parallel between the unfolding concerns of each crisis, whether prevention or treatment, and speculates on how the progression from early confusion and politicization to therapeutic efficacy and access displayed during the HIV/AIDs pandemic will, with determination, be repeated in the current crisis.
