Can Diet Soda Do More Harm Than Good?

A recent study showed that people who consumed one or more cans of artificially sweetened diet soda daily had a three times increased risk for stroke or dementia over a decade compared with those who never drank diet soda.

Although many studies have documented the negative effects of sugary drinks, the study raises the possibility that diet drinks may not be healthy alternatives.

Because the results were derived from an observational study, the lead author is not yet recommending total abstention from diet sodas. However, he recommends that people who currently drink multiple cans of diet soda daily may want to be more cautious.
