HIV and GERD -- What's Contraindicated?

Case Presentation

A 37-year-old man with HIV disease presents with a 1-week history of abdominal pain. His current medications include emtricitibine, tenofovir, atazanavir, ritonavir, and sertraline. A physical exam is unremarkable, with no guarding upon abdominal examination. His labs show the following:

  • CD4 count: 560 cells/µL

  • Viral load: nondetectable

  • Hemoglobin: 13 g/dL

  • Hematocrit: 39%

  • White blood cell count: 7 x 109/L

  • Platelet count: 168,000

  • Alanine aminotransferase: 24 mg/dL

  • Aspartate aminotransferase: 30 mg/dL

  • Total bilirubin: 3.0 mg/dL
