Introduction

The roots of the ethics of the medical Internet are found in 4 sources: medical ethics, journalism ethics, business ethics, and the ethics of medical editing. Each is important, complex, well documented in its field, and applicable. Added to these is an entirely new medium, the Internet, which is an amalgamation of virtually all prior methods of human communication, wrapped into one. With that backdrop, and precious little prior work in the field,[1,2,3] the senior staff of Medscape several months ago began to create the Medscape policy on advertising and sponsorships. We completed the task in August 1999 and present it to you, the reader, here, for the first time.
